guide for renters and guests

SECURITY AND FIRE SAFETY 🔥

  • Follow your homeowner’s preferences about locking doors.

  • Know the street address of your rental in case of emergency. Call 911.

  • Never discard cigarettes outdoors.

  • Make sure there’s a hose with a working nozzle connected to the outdoor water supply.

  • Stay alert for smoke or flames. Investigate and report promptly to 911.

  • Have an evacuation plan for your unit and practice it with everyone in your group.

  • No open fires. Outdoor grills must be attended at all times. Be cautious with hot ashes from fireplaces or grills—never leave ashes on porches or in wooded areas. Be especially vigilant during “No Burn” dry periods.

  • In emergencies, keep roads clear for fire trucks and ambulances.

DRIVING ON BETWEEN THE LAKES ROAD AND OTHER PRIVATE ROADS 🚗

  • Drive slowly—never exceed 15 mph.

  • Watch carefully for children, pets, and walkers.

  • Be courteous. You’re driving on someone’s private land.

  • Pull over to let others pass. A wave or thank-you goes a long way.

  • On Twin Lakes Road (the main road to/from Route 6), the speed limit is 35 mph. Speeding endangers pedestrians and wildlife—numerous deer have been killed.

  • No ATVs.

NOISE AND PRIVACY 🔇

  • No fireworks. They disturb neighbors, pose fire risks, and pollute the lake.

  • Sound travels easily over water. Be mindful when swimming, boating, or gathering outdoors. Please watch your language—neighbors often hear every word.

  • Keep the volume of speakers and music devices low. Avoid using sound equipment near the water.

  • Please keep barking dogs indoors or under control.

POLLUTION CONTROL AND LAKE ECOLOGY 🌊

  • Do not feed geese, ducks, or wild animals. They foul swimming areas and can become aggressive.

  • No motorboats of any kind—including electric—are allowed on Twin Lakes.

  • Never throw garbage or any waste into the lake.

  • Do not use the lake to wash yourself, pets, clothes, or gear.

  • Use non-phosphate or low-phosphate detergents in laundry and dishwashers.

FISHING 🎣

  • Fishing is limited to property owners and their guests or tenants.

  • All Pennsylvania Fish Commission laws and regulations apply.

  • Anyone age 16 or older must have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license, displayed on an outer garment while fishing.

  • TLPOA asks that you:

    • Return bass under 12 inches and pickerel under 18 inches to the water.

    • Keep sunfish and yellow perch only up to the daily limit (50 combined).

    • Take only what you plan to eat.

    • Never throw unwanted fish into the woods—they attract pets and wild animals.

  • Use common sense:

    • Avoid rusty hooks.

    • Cover hooks when not in use.

    • Keep tackle boxes closed when not in use.

    • Don’t stand in boats.

    • Don’t fish in beach wading areas.

BOATING AND SWIMMING 🚣‍♀️🏊

  • By law (PA Fish Commission, May 1, 1955):

    • Every person in a boat must have a properly fitting life jacket.

    • Boats must carry a sound-making device that can be heard at least ½ mile (a plastic whistle works well).

  • Practice safe and courteous boating:

    • Steer clear of docks and floats if people are swimming or relaxing.

    • Swimmers always have the right of way.

  • Always swim with a buddy. If swimming long distances, have someone accompany you in a properly equipped boat.

  • Dive only where you know the depth and underwater conditions.

  • Any watercraft previously used in other lakes must be cleaned with bleach and non/low-phosphate detergent before launch. Clean and rinse on land—never in the lake.

  • If you’re in distress on the water, signal for help by blowing a whistle or horn 3 times. If you hear 3 blasts, respond immediately or call 911.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES 🌿

Curly-leaf pondweed and other invasive plants threaten the health of Twin Lakes. Even a single fragment can take root and spread. To protect our waters:

  • Drain, Dry, and Clean all watercraft, float toys, and gear before entering the lake—especially if they’ve been used elsewhere.

    • Drain all water from boats, bilges, live wells, and gear.

    • Dry thoroughly for at least 5 days in the sun or wash with hot water (140°F) to kill any remaining plant fragments or larvae.

    • Clean with a solution of bleach and non/low–phosphate detergent. Always clean and rinse on land, never in the lake.

  • Never release plants, animals, or bait into the lake. Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash, not in the water.

  • Report unusual plant growth or suspected invasives to your homeowner or TLPOA. Early detection helps us respond quickly.
